June 25, 2025 · Palo Alto, CA – Rubrik (NYSE: RBRK) has announced its intention to acquire Predibase, a startup specializing in fine-tuning and serving open-source models. The deal—reported by multiple sources to range between $100–500 million—marks a major step in Rubrik’s shift from data protection into the burgeoning domain of secure, large-scale AI agent deployment .

A strategic pivot into agentic AI

Predibase, founded by alumni from Google and Uber in 2021, rose to prominence by lowering the barrier from prototype to production-ready AI. Its technology supports parallel fine-tuning, reinforcement fine-tuning, and an optimized serving engine with LoRA eXchange (LoRAX)—enabling organizations to run hundreds of personalized models per GPU This complements Rubrik’s secure data lake, governance, and compliance infrastructure.

Rubrik CEO Bipul Sinha emphasized the synergy: “Together, Rubrik and Predibase will drive agentic AI adoption around the world and unlock immediate value for our customers” Predibase CEO Devvret Rishi added that this merger removes the friction from PoC to production by combining ease-of-use, speed, and cost-efficiency.

What Rubrik gains—and why it matters

  • End-to-end production pipeline
From secure data ingestion and governance to high-performance model serving, Rubrik can now offer a full-stack AI option without exposing proprietary data.
  • Agentic AI readiness
With growing enterprise focus on autonomous workflows, Rubrik is positioning itself ahead of peers by delivering pre-secured AI agent platforms.
  • Cloud-native synergy
Integration with third-party platforms like Amazon Bedrock, Azure OpenAI, and Google Agentspace helps ensure compatibility across major cloud ecosystems

Opinion: calculated bet or overreach?

Rubrik’s pivot feels less like a gamble and more like hedging for the future. The company has evolved from backup to ransomware recovery, and now to AI platform. It’s a bold, forward-looking move—but one that makes strategic sense. Plenty of enterprise AI pilots never make it to production due to data governance, cost, and performance barriers. By bringing Predibase in-house, Rubrik is answering these challenges head-on.

The key will be execution. Enterprise customers won’t just look for AI—they want secure, compliant, high-speed deployment. Rubrik’s challenge will be integrating Predibase without compromising usability and scaling support. If they pull it off, they’ll be one of the few vendors offering a coherent and trusted “data-to-deployment” path.
